Legal Question in Civil Litigation in Iowa
Kept Money Found
I found and kept $200.00 many years ago and am now taking steps to locate the person who lost it so as to make full restuitution. The bills were wrapped in a brown band marked with the bank name (in Iowa) and date: approximately Feb. 13, 1981.
Found on the universtiy campus Saturday morning, I suspect someone lost it the previous night upon entering or exiting the dorm.
My main question is: was my deed a crime? If so, has the statute of limitation expired?
In closing, I deeply regret having not turned the money in to the local or campus police and, if at all possible, I wish to yet locate the owner.
I suspect this is not the usual legal question but hope you can answer all the same so as to enable me to proceed in this search with at least some bit of confidence, though with no less regret.
Thank you.

If there was a crime, the statute of limitations has passed. You can check with the dorm's or University lost and found. They may still have a report which would help you locate the owner.

Even if we assume your actions amounted to a crime, the statute of limitations would have run long ago.
