Legal Question in Insurance Law in Iowa
i live in an apartment building and the tennant above my unit's toilet backed up and leaked all over my bathroom, hallway, and bed room, destroying carpet, electronics, and some clothes. our landlord instructed me to open a renters insurance policy and wait two months to file a claim and when i did he would back me up on it. is this illegal?

No, thats not legal, it would be a fraudulent insurance claim and if you did it and were charged with theft or insurance fraud Im guessing the landlord would not back you up. Your claim is either with the upstairs tenant or with the landlords insurer for the landlords failure to perform maintenance of cleaning out the sewer line.
