Legal Question in Employment Law in Iowa

Can my boss not pay me for driving to a job site?

I am in Iowa.

I operate a concrete pumping machine, and travel quite often for work. I am required to fill out a detailed time-sheet to account for all time worked in a day. I have noticed that my pay stub does not match the hours that I have turned in. I am fairly certain they are not paying me drive time from the motel to the job site -- but I am driving the pump truck back and forth to the job site. I am not driving a personal car or a 'company car.'

I know the law states if the employer provides the vehicle, that they are not required to pay for the drive time. I have read the law regarding this and cannot figure out of this covers a machine like the pump truck, which is obviously required to perform the job to which I am driving.

The problem is employers in Iowa can pretty much do as they please. It is a right to work state which means you can be terminated for any reason, good reason or no reason at all, unless you have a collective bargaining agreement or a contract of employment. It doesn't sound like you're getting paid portal to portal which is what you're asking for. It might be a good idea to ask the company to clarify its policy so you know where you stand.
