Legal Question in Employment Law in Iowa
My husband is a degreed engineer working in the engineering dept of a manufacturer. He and all his coworkers in engineering (and I think all departments) are treated as if they were non-exempt. They are paid OT for any minutes they work over, have a paid 20 minute lunch, etc. However he was in a car accident and missed one day of work. They won't pay him because he hasn't been there long enough to 'earn' time in their paid time off program (he has been there 4 months). He is paid more than twice minimum wage so to me, he should be considered exempt. Can a company just chose to treat all employees as non-exempt?

Iowa is a right to work state which means that you can be terminated for any reason, good reason or no reason at all, unless you have a contract of employment or are covered by a collective bargaining agreement. They can pretty much make the rules.
