Legal Question in Employment Law in Iowa
I am an LPN, and recently started working for a Retirement Home in Sioux City, Iowa. I am an hourly employee. I have been there for two months; and now my boss has just told me that they are splitting my hours between duties as I have worked about 50 hours this week and they do not wish to pay overtime. They are also doing this to a few other employees who have overtime. Also, they are docking my pay 7.5 hours from the last month as I am a smoker and take two short breaks; but I do not take a 30 minute lunch hour. Are these practices legal? Thank you!

Iowa is a right to work state which means you can be terminated for any reason, good reason or no reason at all. However I would bring your concerns to the attention of the Office of the Labor Commissioner here in Des Moines as I have concerns about them dividing up your hours to avoid paying overtime.
