Legal Question in Employment Law in Iowa
My position with my company was eliminated and we signed a separation agreement that included a severance package. A few days later, HR sent an email stating I left to pursue other opportunities. I had several current employees call me and ask what happened as they assumed I was fired the way the email stated I "left to pursue other opportunities". As this statement is a euphemism for being fired, do I have any legs to bring a defamation of character case against them?

Well, you might be able to bring a case if you are willing to fund the litigation that it would take. You'd also have to prove your contention even though it is something "everybody knows".
