Legal Question in Employment Law in Iowa

Recently I was laid off and received a severence package. The HR representative was not able to answer any questions.

My prior company, based in RI, opened a campus in Iowa to fulfill a 3 year contract with our client. Two years into the contract our client had leadership changes and wanted changes to our contract. After audits and questioning, it was found we were not in breach of the contract and met all metrics required. My company told me we were committed to having a presence in the midwest and we were secure. Last week, I was informed that our company was closing our campus and ending work with our client. My company does not have the capital to keep the Iowa campus open while they look for more clients. My company offered all of us a small severence.

My question - how can I negotiate my severence? Do I have any legal ground to negotiate?

It would depend on the terms of your employment contract or collective bargaining agreement. If you have neither, then your employer would not be required to pay you anything other than earned wages, vacation time, etc.
