Legal Question in Employment Law in Iowa
I was just recently given a severance agreement notice stating that both parties wish to end the relationship. I have not signed it because I do not wish to end the relationship. I have been in a hostile work environment for a year and recenetly my supervisor screamed at me in front of the entire office. I emailed the HR director immediatley about what had just happened and in this letter I had stated that I have been looking for another job, I have sought medical attention for depression and anxiety because of the environment my supervisor has created. I told the HR dierector that I didn't know where to go from here and that I am done taking the crap. The HR director responded with a thank you for the note and said he would be in town in a couple of days to talk to me. The next day I sent a formal letter of complaint to the HR director about the issues in the office. When the HR director came to talk to me he mentioned that since we are merging employees from another office into ours he didn't want to keep a job opened for me since I was unhappy and didn't want to be there anyway. He mentioned working out a severance agreement to give me a "soft landing" I said I couldn't afford to be without a job, He agreed to let the staffing agency that placed me with them help me find another job and told my manager that she was to let me go on interviews if I was called for one and that at some point there may be a line drawn in the sand. I agreed to be able to look for a job. There was no length of time discussed on how long he would allow this. Approximatley a month later he called me and stated that they would be phasing my job out over the next couple of months and the company lawyers were drafting a severance agreement for me. A week later he calls with the severance agreement and tells me my last day is in 2 weeks (November 11). I got the severance agreement on a Friday half an hour before the day was over and was told the only person I could discuss the agreement with his my husband, and they expected it signed and scanned to his email on the following Monday. I have not signed this agreement. It basically says that I agreed to end the relationship and they offered almost two weeks pay as my soft landing as he put it. I have been looking for a new job the last year and have not found one at this point. If I sign this agreement I cannot even collect unemployment. I am at a loss of what to do. I don't believe what he is doing is right and I don't know what I shoud do. Can you point me in the right direction or tell me if I am just stuck please?
