Legal Question in Employment Law in Iowa
I work as a superintendent for a construction company. I am a salary employee who travels to job a job site during the week and home for the weekends. my typical work week is 4-10 hour days and 1 - 5 hour for a total 45 hours per week. Every 2 weeks when time cards are issued my hours like most salary people are over . On my time card my total hours are crossed out and replaced with 80. I routinely go meet and go over the 45 hour work week. I recently had a 2 week period where the job was ending with just a couple minor items left to take care of. My office didnt have the next project ready for me to go to so they had be basically just on site waiting for the subs to show for these minor items scheduled thru the weeks. Since there was no pressing issue and a subcontractor had to cancel one week I went home early for the week. I did not use any vacation time so my 2 week total came to 76.5 hours. When I got my paycheck it seemed short. As I looked over my copy of time card and pay stub . I noticed that my boss had written on it to only pay me for 76.5 hours. My question is , Is this legal? I dont get paid for going over the hours but get docked when I come in under? This seems like a have your cake and eat it too scenario for my employer to me. Thx

That sounds like something you need to take up with the office of the labor commisioner. Having said that, Iowa is a right to work state and a person can be fired for any reason good reason or no reason at all unless you have a contract of employment or are covered by a collective bargaining agreement. Let caution be your watchword.
