Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Iowa
Up to code on many issues
I just moved into a duplex which is in a big house where I am in the upstairs level of it. Ive had nany things happening.#1st thing many repairs are needed and he suggests I fix them and he will deduct off rent..I am a disabaled woman that knows nothing about fixing anything that is needed in these cases. The stove does now work, Ive had to clean out mice feces in the stove and cuppords,There is no firescape, tanants downstairs are extremely loud, new siding was done 2 weeks ago but was not finished and all the scraps are littered everywhere, some hitting my car at times, they broke my porch light, yard work is to be included in the lease but is not as my steps are not shoveled nor the walk or yardwork but twice a year. I can keep going. Should I just see a lawyer on this as it has been brought to the managers attn but nothing has been done? I did not sign a lease to live in the scum that I am living in. I dont want him to rent this to anyone else as this is not right that he thinks someone can live in the places he rents. Ive looked at many of his other property's and This is a mansion compaired to those. He should not be able to lease property's!! Ever!!

Find a legal aid real estate lawyer in your town (or call the nearest law school and ask for the clinic) for assistance. You may be able to obtain court assistance if your dwelling is a breach of habitability covenants.
