Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Iowa
Hi.
My father of ill-health passed away on Saturday. I had been living with him to care for him. He was renting his house and suddenly, this morning, the landlord came to the door telling me that he wanted me out by next Saturday and if I wasn't, I would be trespassing. He didn't ask for January rent or anything like that. Rent was paid through December.
Though I would like to leave here ASAP anyhow, I do not think I can do it in 7 days. Does he have the right to give me such a short time frame? We have not been unsavory tenants at all in any possible way.
Please let me know if you need further information.
Thank you,
Mark

Do you have a lease? The landlord has to give you reasonable notice. If you don't leave he's got to file an action known as a FED-forcible entry and detainer, and he has to serve you personally. It takes a while to come up in court so that'll buy you some time.
