Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Iowa

housing

what rights do we have as renters to stay in our current property? Our landlord has divorced and our home went to his exwife and she plans on selling it. We have told her that its not sellable due to the fact that he didnt repair the roof which has destroyed a room and caused a mold problem but with out situation we told her we would stay and pay rent, which would help her situation. we have not had any communcation with her. she avoids us. she sent her sister to give us a letter saying she is selling the house. we havnt heard anything from her or her sister since then. her sister has also told us we can not tell her exhusband that we got that letter and we are to act as if we know nothing. What can we do? we cant afford to move and we know she isnt going to get anythign out of selling she would have more of an income from us renting. we would just like ot know what legal options we have.

Re: housing

I would want to review your written lease and research the LL liability statute re: repairs.

I have 30 years experience as a LL and have advised numerous LL's and Tenants re: sale and lease issues.

For now you should not communicate with LL or her representatives until you obtain legal counsel.

Call or email for assistance.
