Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Iowa

My husband and I had a 1-year lease on a duplex. Three months before the lease was up, we were given the opportunity to move into a house. I notified the landlord, and she confirmed she would seek new tenants. We hosted several tours, but by the time we moved out two months later the duplex was not rented. We cleaned the unit and returned the keys, but did not pay the last month's rent - as we weren't living there, no longer had access, and could not afford rent at both locations. We are now in search of a new apartment. Could our decision effect our ability to rent in the future?

Yes. You broke the lease and did not pay the last month's rent-that can show up on your credit report. Get yourself a free credit report-you're entitled to one each year from the three reporting agencies-and see what's showing up.
