Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Iowa

i live in a rented condo. My landlord owns 2 buildings seperated by parking. Due to snow and ice i fell and the step walking out of my building. The fall resulted in an emergency room visit. The fall punctured my lung. I talked to my landlord about his responsibility and he said its my fault i fell. The other building was shoveled and treated but my building was not. When i brought this up to the landlord he said that the guy does a really good job and that he leaves a bucket of kitty litter out so that the tenets can treat if its needed. There is a sign up that says that the kitty litter is for in between cars if we feel it is needed. As far as i know it would be his responsibility (or his insurence) for the damages it has caused. I am not the only person that has fallen in my building. The other person was told the same thing that it was not our landlords fault and that they should be more careful when walking. She suffered no real injuries just a small cut. I would like to know what the law says about the responsibility of the landlord for my injuries. I am not sure as of now if this is going to effect my job i do manual labor. However the hole will effect my breathing for the rest of my life.

There is such a thing as premise liability. I suggest you contact an attorney before too much time goes by but understand you'll be declaring war on the landlord.
