Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Iowa
I moved out of a house I rented in feb. My landlord is telling me I owe him back rent. However he had a habit of holding my checks and I asked him before I moved to cash all out standing checks. Now he has found some from two years ago. We had no written contract and there were several issues with the house. I had two birds in the house due to a gutter that was falling off the house, I had snow in my house due to poor foundation and so on. I recently re wrote a check and he still has not cashed that. He didn't even approach me about the back rent until the end of may what are my rights

I assume the checks you paid the landlord were for rent. Whether he cashed them or not does not erase your obligation to pay rent as it comes due even if the landlord burns the checks in his fireplace.
