Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in Iowa
I was recently denied to rent from a property due to a charge I received back in 2003 of a serious misdemeanor for possession of marijuana. I have had no other charges of any kind and I am not a felon. Is it OK for this renter to go back 7 years when doing a criminal background check?

The landlord can rent to you under any conditions they may care to impose just as long as they haven't discriminated on the basis of race, religion, gender, disabled status or arguably sexual orientation and they haven't violated any provision of Iowa's landlord tenant laws. Being convicted of a crime does not put you in a protected class.
