Is there a laww that an attorney must send out a letter to you if he will not respent you?

There is no law per se requiring lawyers to provide clients at the time of discharge with letters of separation. But in Iowa it's a good idea to do so since another attorney may need confirmation that the first is no longer involved. Also attorney's have some ethical obligation to cooperate with clients at the point where they no longer represent them. In Iowa we have new rules of ethics and I'm not at the office so I can not check the current rule pertaining to a lawyer�s obligation at the time employment ends. A letter to the attorney advising that if they do not provide written confirmation and a copy of your file that you will file a complaint with the Board of Professional Responsibility, is usually enough to obtain this minimum level of cooperation.
