Legal Question in Personal Injury in Iowa

I was in an accident no other vehicles i went on a test drive of a used car i went to stop and the brakes went to the floor i swerved went in a ditch an ambulance came and the police they took me to the hosipital with injuries the police discovered the brakes didnt work like i said now the car lot is trying to sue me for the damages to his car am i responsible for his damages and can i go after him for my injuries and damages
