Legal Question in Personal Injury in Iowa

I am a server. I needed to seat a table, and a phone was plugged into an outlet at this table. I quickly ask all the cooks and servers whos phone it was. (this was also our break table) Noone claims it, and i sit it up on the ledge so that I can seat these guests. Well, the phone slides off right into a pitcher of water. Later, a customer who was seated across the restaurant asks where her phone went. I hand it to her and explain what happened. She was pissed, to say the least. My boss scolded me about how I cant make mistakes, and that Im paying for her new iphone (which is $500, and she most likely doesnt have insurance on it b/c I heard you cant get it on an iphone..) What would you tell my boss?

Unless you have an agreement to compensate your employer for losses, your employer may be out of luck. On the other hand, unless you have an employment contract or collective bargaining agreement, your employment is at-will, which means your employment can be terminated for no reason at all.
