my son borrowed a friends bike and asked another friend to return it and his friend left the bike at a library, and it got stolen. Is my son who borrowed the bike, financially responsible?

Yes, the bike was his responsibility. You son is responsible to the owner. You son can sue the boy that borrowed and left it where it could be stolen. That is what lawyers refer to as a cross-claim.
