Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Iowa

Debt an a house

I have house that is in my name, and my partner and I are going to get married. He has a lot of debt from student loans. The house is not our main residents. Can they come in and take the house from me after we get married? We are from Iowa.

Re: Debt an a house

If you are the only owner of the property, getting married should not change anything. I would not suggest conveying the property to your spouse-to-be if he has any judgments against him (or a probability that he will have judgments entered against him). Keep in mind that the debts alone will not result in an enforceable lien against real estate, only judgments will do that. And congratulations on your upcoming wedding. For more specific answers, you would need to discuss you situation in detail with an attorney.
