Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Iowa

eviction

I rented an apartment in Sept of 98 I signed a one year lease We moved in before it was

done and put in a sink. It used to be all one apt and was being seperated into two. The land lord was suppose to put a door up to seperate the apartments my neighbor moved in

around the middle of october. She can lock us out but she could enter our apt. at any time. it is now May and the landlord still does not have a door seperating the apartments.

I have asked numerous times for a door I have 3 small children There are also wires hanging out of the ceiling and most of the plug ins dont work. Also our apt was broken

into and A window was broke I made out a police report and the landlord had me go to a local company to have it replace saying his insurance would take care of it. I got a bill for the window in my name I gave it to him and he addded the window to my rent. He told me

since I rented the apt it was techinicly my property and i was responsible for all repairs

even if it wasnt regular wear and tear. Now he wants to evict us. I would like to know about landlord/tenant laws

Sounds to me like you need to find another place to live, but under normal laws a rental must be safe and habitable. Get an attorney, if you can't afford one try legal aid. Also, if there is a housing authority in your community call them. It is unfortunate that there are people in the world that take advantage of others for their own gain.
