Mechanic lien
Does a contractor need a written contract to obtain a mechanic lien against a property. We verbally agreed to a basketball slab in the field of $300 to $400 however the contractor billed us over $3000 ouch. Poured July 2, 2004 billed Sept 2004 disputed with-in 30 days by us, he continued to bill, mechanic lien recvd March 29, 2005.

No written contract is required. However, his lien is likely not valid if the work was completed in July 2004 and the lien was not filed until March 2005.
