Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Iowa
I was parked on the lot of a quick mart type store waiting for my wife who was riding with a friend from an event so they would not have to bring her all the way to the house, out of their way. The store workers reported someone in a car watching them with binoculars; I was reclined in my seat listening to music. When the officer arrived he had to wake me up to talk to me, I had fallen asleep, I had been there for about 40 minutes.
He said I should not be there for that amount of time and suggested that I time it so that I could meet my wife at her arrival or no more than 10 minutes before. I was at least 100 ft away from the entrance and off to the side with no clear view of any activities in the store.
Is the officer within legal rights to tell me not to par there for 40 min or even one hour if I'm waiting for someone and not impeding the store operations?

It is private property. If the owner does not want you on their property, you can be asked to leave. It really does not seem like good customer relations, but it is up to the store.
