Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Iowa

Raising Price of Rent

Can the property management in charge of our apartment building raise rent over $200? Our 6 month lease is up in 5 weeks; however they said we could sign another 6 month at the same price. Now 6 month leases nor the same price is available. Also we have not moved out yet.

Re: Raising Price of Rent

The rent cannot be raised until the lease expires (assuming there is no clause which allows unilateral rent increases, which would be odd). After the lease expire, there is no limit as to what the landlord can charge for rent (again, assuming there is no clause which limits rent increases in extensions of the lease). If you want to know with any degree of certainty, you will need to have an attorney review the current lease agreement.
