Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Iowa

I recently bought a business that has and apartment on ground level with an entrance from the town square. It has been an apartment for about 8 years. The city is telling me I have 6 months to move out. The zoning laws were not made until after the apartment was already there. Can they force me to move out?

Dear Puzzled: In most states there are laws that proviode fopr "grandfathering", meaning, your presence and use preceded the more recently enacted zoning.

Consult and retain experienced legal counsel ASAP to assert your rights and best interests.

While I'm not admitted to prctice law in your state, I do recognize the constituionality, equity and judicial fairness to which you are entitled. Good luck!

Sincerely,
