Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Iowa

Rental Lease Void

I have already moved out of my house and it is all cleaned up. My roommate and I are still paying rent/utilities. He just joined the military so his part of the contract is void. Is the whole contract void, or only his half? And am I now legally responsible for the whole rent. We had a verbal agreement to keep paying half each, but I have no way of contacting him anymore.. or since December.

Re: Rental Lease Void

the landlord isn't responsible for any sort of Agreement between YOU or YOUR roommate if he had not been informed by it & contract drawn accordingly & specifically pointing that any deposits, rents, expenses, etc... are to be divided between both!

Do refer to my past answers in Rent/Lease Category to see a detailed answer to your question as one of the landlords faced same problem with both his tenants.

Besides, what led you to believe that your contract is void? Did you inform the landlord that your roommate is not exploiting the rented unit so he could amend the contract?!
