Legal Question in Real Estate Law in Iowa

Renters Rights

We are currently renting a house. We have never signed a lease as the landlords gave us verbal rights to live there as long as we wanted as long as we were current on rent. We have not missed a payment and they are telling us we now have a deadline to be out. We have a baby and we are wondering what our rights are as we do not want to be out on the street with a young child. Can you help us with our rights?

Re: Renters Rights

Unfortunately, without a written lease, you are on what is called month to month tenancy. This means that either you or the landlord can terminate the lease with 30 days' written notice. Assuming your rent is due on the first of the month, and your landlord gave you written notice before the end of November, you would have until the end of December to vacate the property.
