Just recently, I was notified that the state department of revenue is claiming I did not file my individual tax return from 11 years ago. Back in those days, I would have done the tax preparation myself and I have no copy of it after losing everything in the 2008 Iowa flood. Now they claim I also owe penalties and interest as well. I don't know what to do about this because I know for a fact that I have always filed my taxes. How many years are we taxpayers required to keep copies of our returns?

You've got to be able to show that you filed. Does your employer still have copies of your W2s? Federal return might be helpful if you have a copy of it. You need to see what kind of proof they've got.
