Legal Question in Traffic Law in Iowa

One cold night I drove my mother's car to the store. On the way home I noticed a friend walking without a coat so I stopped in the road because there was no traffic and my friend got in and buckled his seat belt. I then noticed a cop behind me who followed a couple blocks and pulled me over. I told him I didn't have a license and that I was on my way home. He ran both our names then asked to search the car. After not finding anything he wrote me up for "driving while suspended, canceled, or revoked" and told me to drive straight home. I plead not guilty at my first court date now a trial is set. Did the officer have probable cause to stop me? He did not witness a moving violation and I did not affect traffic in any way.

You were stopped in the middle of the roadway. That's reasonable cause and it is plenty enough to inquire further. And, it seems, you gave it up. Of course you can make your arguments at trial.
