Legal Question in Traffic Law in Iowa

My cousin and i were pulled over for a traffic violation. He was driving my car with a permit and i was a passenger. We thought that was legal, but we were informed by the officer that i needed to be 21 for him to drive with me. ( I am only 20). They then asked us to pull to the side of the parking lot we were in and began to search my car. They found a pot pipe on him and he was given a ticket. They searched my purse found a mint case that the officer believed had once had pot in it. I was also given a ticket. I plead not guilty to the charge at the first court date. I do not believe that i am guilty, however i want to get this whole deal over with. I can't afford a lawyer, lose my license, or have the charge really because i go to college and it may affect my financial aid. Would it be best for me to just plead guilty and ask for a deffered judgement or to continue on with the not guilty and go to trial?

Apply for a court appointed attorney then, and get yourself some representation.
