Legal Question in Traffic Law in Iowa

no insurance

I had just bought a car and got pulled over and in getting pulled over they found out that i had no insurance on the vehicle since i had just bought it less than an hour ago. They even talked on the phone with the guy i had bought the car from and said he had received partial payment but had not given me the title to the car yet. They still issued me an insurance ticket. It was also at night and all insurance places were closed. Shouldn't i get 24 hours to get insurance on the vehicle. I also had a bill of sale in the car but the officer wouldn't even let me talk to say that i had one. Is that right that i received the ticket?

Re: no insurance

You are required to carry insurance when you are driving a car. It does not matter whether you own the car. There is absolutely no requirement that the officer allow you any time to purchase insurance. But, if you do purchase the insurance required by law and can show proof in court, the state's attorney or the Judge may dismiss the charge against you upon payment of a modest amount in fines or costs. Good luck.

Re: no insurance

If you didn't have insurance you didn't have insurance. You should have left it where it was until you got insurance.
