Legal Question in Wills and Trusts in Iowa

Our dad died and left his oldest son to be Executor. Can the other brothers and sisters split the personal assets without consulting the Executor? In other words, can they steal all the personal items before the Executor does inventory?

They're not supposed to, but it happens pretty regularly. The only thing you can do is ask them to return what was taken, and litigate on behalf of the estate if they do not. Of course that costs money as well.
