Short Term Disability is my job safe?

I am currently out on FMLA due to a disability condition. I was just contacted by HR and told that my FMLA has run out and they are going to have to let me go unless the doc will release me to full work status. I thought at the end of the FMLA, I would use up STD until the doc released me, to 75%. My question is, can they do this? I thought my job was protected through Short Term Disability.

This is a lot more complicated than you might think. Are you disabled due to a workmans' comp. injury? Has that claim been filed? Has any doctor released you back to work? If so, with or without restrictions? Are you a union member? If so what does the contract say about disability? Have you applied for disability insurance benefits? If so has it been denied and if so why? Many questions must be answered before knowing your options. See an attorney.
