According to the italian law there are different causes of divorce, but statistically the most Common is the separation that lasts for at least 3 years from the first hearing in court related to the mutual legal agreement of separation or to the trial of separation (in case there was no agreement ), the period before the first hearing does not count.
There are also other causes, different from the one above shortly described, one of them might potentially involve you as a US (foreigner) citizen. And in your case it is necessary also to ascertain which national law applies and to which state belong the the jurisdiction. In order to be able to advice, i need to get the details.
