What exactly is civil litigation? Does divorce/custody apply as civil litigation? Thank you.

There are two types of litigation: civil and criminal. The Criminal Justice System is where crimes are dealt with; the Civil Justice System deals with, often, money. Divorce and child custody are within the domestic relations division of the Civil Justice System.
