Yes. The police can search a home pursuant to a search warrant, with verbal consent or in an emergency.

A search warrant is written permission from a judge. It can later be contested. Every situation is somewhat fact dependent. In many cases verbal consent by the owner or renter is sufficient to authorize a search.
