Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in Kansas
I purchased an item at Walmart and when leaving they said they had to see my receipt. I told them no and walked to my car at which point a large number of walmart employees as well as the local police, whom I am told were contracted to walmart as security refused to let me leave until I produced a redeipt. I asked them if the had any cause to stop me like an eployee , customer or camera seeing me steal an item. They said no but that it is store policy to check all receipts. I was not allowed to leave until I showed the receipt for the item that I in fact had purchased. How can they do that? I fealt threatened and furious for being treated like a criminal for no reason. I thought we were innocent ubtil proven guilty but the police did not give me that right.

It sounds like this really upset you. If the officers were in uniform when they detained you, you should make a formal complaint with their police department. Tell their supervisor that you expect them to investigate the incident and that you demand that they (the supervisor) apologize to you. You may not get the apology, but you will lessen the chance that this will happen to another shopper.
Good luck
