Legal Question in Consumer Law in Kansas

When my father passed away I was given a bill from the funeral home with what each insurance policies face value was. I was told the final bill would be less due to what ever interest had accrued on each policy. Several months passed and I never received a final bill. I needed to get all his affairs taken care of and do not like owing anyone money. I went ahead and paid the amount on the original bill. A few months after that I received another bill for an additional $900. The funeral home had added an insurance policy that had belonged to my mother who had passed in 2001. After having settled all his debits there is no money left in his estate to pay the extra amount. I would like to know since it was not my fault and I paid what the original bill said am I liable for the additional $900.

If the extra $900 bill reflected charges from 2001, you may not be liable for it. First, Kansas has a 5 year statute of limitations on contracts. Secondly, did you promise to be liable for your mother's debts, or did you inherit her estate? Even if you did, the funeral home may have waited too long to collect on this debt. Feel free to contact me if you want to review this.
