Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in Kansas

Was the call a scammer or a real debt collector? received a call they claimed they was collecting an old debt from a car repo in 2008 he stated that he would be willing to do a settlement on the account or there would be a garnishment and he would like to get this settled then to do a garnishment. The account is 5000.00 but he would be willing to accept 1500.00 if I would pay right then. I stated that I do not have that kind of money so he stated they could take 1000.00 I told him that would be okay if they accepted a payment plan. He told me to hold on a second and he would kind out if they could do a payment plan. He came back and stated they could do a payment plan if I would do a 500.00 payment every two weeks. I told him I could not do that I could do a 500.00 payment once a month it would be really tight and I would not be able to buy any groceries. He stated that the payment would be due on NOv 16th, Dec 14th and Jan 11th. I said okay then he asked for a debit card and I told him that I did not have one (which I don't) then he asked for my checking account number an I informed him that I do not carry checks because I do not have any money in my account. I told him to send me an email stating what we agreed on and I would give the info then. He stated he would call me the next day to let me know when the email was sent. I have never heard back from him. Now I am very worried that either they are going to do a garnishment or they were scammers that had all my credit information.

If you recieved no previous correspondence from this collector, the phone call was a scam. You should report the number and company name to the Attorney General's office.

Good luck
