Legal Question in Criminal Law in Kansas

Consequences for alcohol related crimes

I just turned 18 and I had a hotel party. I did not provide any of the alcohol, but I don't know who brought it. I am getting charged for a MIP, hosting a juvenile party and providing alcohol to minors. I am not 21 so I cannot provide the alcohol. I can't afford a lawyer so I have to get a court appointed one...what should I do....and what will probably happen to me??

Re: Consequences for alcohol related crimes

The legislature passed this new "social hosting" law recently and it includes harsh penalties including jail. If you rented the room you are responsible, even if you did not bring the alcohol. Just because your under 21 doesn't mean you can't provide alcohol. It just means you did not get it legally.

You should reconsider whether you can hire a lawyer. There are a few competent, experienced lawyers who take appointed cases, but very often you will get a lawyer who is inexperienced and/or not very skilled. They take the appointed cases because they need the business. I would advise you to do whatever you have to do to hire one of the best lawyers in your area. This case could affect your ability to get into school, get a job, or get a promotion. Contact me if you have any questions.
