The common law rule defined a felony as any crime which could carry a sentence of one year or more in jail. You are correct that the states classify felonies differently, and that the penalties also vary. Then there is the federal statutory scheme. The list of prohibitions felons must follow is lengthy, but you are on the right track. A good site to research felonies is findlaw.com. Good luck with your paper !
