Legal Question in Criminal Law in Kansas
Shoplifting Fines
I was charged with shoplifting an item under 50 dollars. The merchandise was returned and I paid a 50 dollar civil settlement to the company. Now I am having a hearing to set a fine for punishment. I am pleading guilty or no contest. What will the fine be approximately? What is the maximum they can fine me? Is it better to plead no contest or guilty?

Re: Shoplifting Fines
since you have settled with the alleged victim, they may not show up to testify against you in criminal court. If they do not show up to testify, the prosecutor may not be able to make a case against you. In that case, you may be successful in asking the judge to Dismiss the case against you. Do not plead anything but "Not Guilty" until you know whther the prosecutor has a case agaisnt you. Get an attorney to represent you, or at least to examine the case for you.
Good Luck,
