Legal Question in Criminal Law in Kansas

I got a ticket stating that i have to go to court for having possession of marajuana and possesion of having some wrappers in my car also. I did not know that they were in there and they were in the backseat. The officer told me that he believed that i knew nothing of it being there and I didnt. There was another person with me that admittted after we both got a Must Appear, that it was his. and he had forgot he put it in there when he had taken my car earlier that day. I am not sure what to do and he said that he is going to tell them that i did not know, because i honestly in fact didnt know. I was just as surprised as the cop when he pulled it out of my car..

As you could get significant jail time, you shoudl consult directly with counsel, either paid or court appointed, if you are indigent. If your friend appears and admits that he put the items in yrou car ealrier that day, without your knowledge, then you may be able

to successfully defend yourself. But, if he fails to show or hedges, then you could get convicted. It may be worth your freedom and money to hire counsel to represent you, At least get a subpeona to force your "friend" to come to your court hearing and be examined under oath. If he tells the prosecutor that he is admitting he put it there and you did not know about it, the prosectuor may dismiss that charge against you without a trial.
