Adopting an abused teenage girl
How do we adopt/become legal gaurdians of a 14yr old
girl? {*Chrissy) She has been shipped between a
(convicted) drug/alcohol abusing father in CA and a
mother convicted of accessory to murder in KA.
(currently on parole) I have a stable home with wife & 2
girls 14-16.
Chrissy was told in KA by an attorney after age 13 she
has the option of choosing where she wants to live if
she is being abused/deserted. Is this true? What can
we do to help this child? We have known her for all of
her life except for 3 years in KA.

Is the child in the custody of Dept of Social Rehabilitation Services (SRS)? If so, do they know of your willingness to provide guardianship for this child? If SRS is unaware of this situation, advise the agency in the jurisdiction where the child resides. Sounds like you have two parents whose parental rights have not been severed, therefore, you cannot adopt until such time as a court determines the parents unfit. Do you have legal counsel? If not, you should retain an attorney as this area of law is fairly intricate. Good luck. . .we need more parents willing to share with needy children.
