Dead Beat Dad for 24months wants to be a father finally

I got pregnant and the dad ran off. No contact was made until my son was one year old, and I called him. He saw my son, the whole time wandering why he didnt look anything like him. No contact again for 3 months. Out of the blue he calls wanting to be a dad finally. I gave him a bogus story stating he wasnt the father, scared now, I dont know what to do. What do I have to do legally to protect my son from this man who never was there for him, emotionally, or financially? I thought about having a man adopt him, or signing my rights over to my parents. would this work to help keep the dad away from my son, and prevent any custody issues in the future? please help, I just dont want my son to go through the stress I've been through for 24 months now! thank you.

If you are married, you could have your husband adopt the child. The natural father's rights would need to be terminated or he would have to consent. Likewise, you could have your parents adopt the child. However, either the natural father would have to consent or you would have to have his rights terminated. www.kansasfamilylawblog.com
