guardianship of a minor child

I currently have a 16 year old girl living at my home. Her boilogical mother has agreed to give me guardianship of her. Her biological father is not involved.I would like to be able to get her medical insurance and give my information the her school as a contact. I don't know how to beging this process. Is it legal to have her mother write a letter giving my guardianship and have it notorized?

Re: guardianship of a minor child

In some states, you can execute a Power of Attorney for a Minor for up to one year, which would need only be signed and notarized; however, I am not aware of any Kansas statute which authorizes such a Power of Attorney in Kansas. If this is not an option in KS, you would need to seek a guardianship with the court. I know that Kansas SRS will assist in permanent guardianships for relatives, but it sounds like you want a temporary guardianship and the child is not related to you. I would suggest hiring an attorney that can research the relevant law and prepare the necessary documents for you. Feel free to give me a call if you would like assistance in this matter. Best of luck.
