The ability to cover another person on a health insurance policy generally depends on having a family relationship with that person. If that relationship ends by divorce or legal separation, such a "triggering event" will terminate the other person's ability to be covered. There are limited time exceptions, such as when a former spouse is entitled to COBRA continuation coverage. Any agreement to cover a former spouse on health insurance after the marriage ends is generally going to be considered unenforceable, and any attempt to maintain the coverage without notifying the insurance carrier of the relationship change may be considered insurance fraud.
