my wife went to court and got legal custody of her granddaughter after her mother just took off. this has been over 4yrs. ago and we were not married at the time. we have been married 3yrs. now and are wondering about what if any, responsibility i share. i have been taking her to the doctors, getting meds, sign forms, etc. we have had to problems at all but am i her leagal gaurdian also because we got married? AND GOD FORBID,if our granddaughter and wife were in an accident what happens? can i make a decision if the wife can't?

Under the circumstances you described, it may be best to consider adoption by you and your wife. There are many variables that affect that decision. Much more than can be determined by the limited fact pattern you provided here. However, I can tell you that if your wife were in an accident, you may not be able to handle her granddaughter's affairs. The other big question is, what happens if the child's mother or father come back into the picture.
Discuss this situation with your wife. If she shares your concerns, make an appointment with an adoption attorney in your area. Some will provide a free initial consultation. However, advice that important is worth paying for, if you have to.
