An experienced judge will often try to impose the least restrictive measures to protect both the parties and children, while facilitating safe and healthy parenting time. For example, parenting time might be scheduled during the middle of a day, when drinking is less likely, and the child exchange would be denied if it is apparent that a parent has been drinking. If that does not appear feasible, then supervised exchange may be ordered, so a third party can monitor the exchange, and make the determination whether it is safe to allow parenting time. If that does not seem likely to work, then fully supervised parenting time may be ordered. Cost is a factor, and the judge will always try to determine what is in the best interest of the children.
